Most of Dehradun does its Diwali shopping in one small corner of the city. Paltan Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, Hanuman Chowk and Dhamawala are all within walking distance of the Clock Tower, and in the week before the festival it feels like half the valley is squeezed into those lanes.
This guide covers where to go for what, how this year's festive traffic rules work, and what to buy if you want gifts that are actually from here.
Diwali 2026 dates
The five days fall like this in 2026:
- Dhanteras: Friday, 6 November
- Choti Diwali: Saturday, 7 November
- Diwali and Lakshmi Puja: Sunday, 8 November
- Govardhan Puja: Monday, 9 November
- Bhai Dooj: Tuesday, 10 November
Diwali falls on a Sunday this year, and most shops in Paltan Bazaar are normally shut on Sundays. Some will open for the festival, but your usual shop might not be one of them. Try to finish your shopping by Saturday evening.
Paltan Bazaar traffic rules this festive season
The district administration has made Paltan Bazaar vehicle-free from 11 am to 7 pm for the festive season. According to the city's traders' association, the rule started on 27 October and covers Moti Bazaar and Hanuman Chowk too. Cars, three-wheelers and loading vehicles are stopped at the entry points, but two-wheelers can go in. Shopkeepers can load and unload only before 11 am and after 7 pm.
Walking the bazaar is much easier this way. The catch is that you can't pull up outside a shop, load a carton of diyas and drive off. Park outside and carry what you buy, or ask the shop to hold your bags until the evening.
Last Diwali, the traffic police listed Gandhi Inter College and CNI School as parking for Paltan Bazaar shoppers, along with the MDDA complex at Ghanta Ghar and the multi-storey parking at Kanak Chowk. This year's list may be different, so check the Dehradun Police announcements before you head out.
Local tip · if you can, go before 11 am on a weekday. The lanes are quieter, and the shopkeeper has time to show you more than the first three things on the shelf.
Where to go for Diwali shopping in Dehradun
Paltan Bazaar: clothes, dry fruits and the main festive buying
Paltan Bazaar starts at Ghanta Ghar (the Clock Tower) and is the oldest market in the city. It has most of what a household needs for Diwali: new clothes, dry fruits, spices, Doon basmati, gift boxes and decorations. From Dhanteras onwards it's also the most crowded place in Dehradun, so walk in with a list or you'll walk out without half of it.

Dhamawala: utensils and jewellery for Dhanteras
On Dhanteras, a lot of families buy something in metal, whether that's a steel or brass utensil, a silver coin or a piece of jewellery. In Dehradun, people go to the Dhamawala section for this, towards the railway station end of the bazaar. It will be packed on 6 November.
Moti Bazaar and Hanuman Chowk
Moti Bazaar has wholesale-style shops, which helps if you're buying the same gift for a lot of people. It also has the city's best-known chole katlamba, so plan your food break here (our street food guide has the details). Near the Hanuman temple at Hanuman Chowk, Chetan Pooriwala serves puri sabzi, which is reason enough to start your shopping morning there.
Indira Market
Near Darshan Lal Chowk, Indira Market has everyday clothes, shoes and bags at reasonable prices. If you just need a new kurta for Lakshmi Puja and don't want to fight the Paltan Bazaar crowd, it's the calmer choice.
Tibetan Market, Parade Ground
Diwali comes right as the winter stock arrives. The stalls at the Tibetan Market near the Parade Ground sell jackets, sweaters, caps and gloves, and with a Doon winter on the way, a good jacket is a gift that will actually get used.
Gifts that come from Dehradun
You can get dry fruit boxes and chocolate hampers anywhere. If you want a gift that's actually from Doon, try one of these.
- Rusks or cake rusk from an old bakery. Ellora's Melting Moments on Rajpur Road is the famous name, and Quality Bakery is near the Clock Tower. Our bakeries guide has more.
- Doon basmati, from Paltan Bazaar. Most elders will be happier with a small bag of good basmati than another box of sweets.
- Pahadi produce: honey, gahat, rajma, mandua flour and pahadi salt. Pahadi Store, Dehradun has branches in Ballupur and on the Doon University campus, and PAHADI ORGANIC HUB is in Ajabpur Khurd. Put three or four of these in a basket and you have a better hamper than most ready-made ones.
- Handloom. Himalayan Weavers Dehradun in Old Rajpur sells handloom shawls and stoles. For shawls, the older woollen shops in Paltan Bazaar, like Urvashi Wool House and Bareilly Wool Bhandar, are worth a look too.
- A book. The English Book Depot is one of the city's best-known bookshops, and Moti Bazaar has several book depots.
Sweets
Every part of Dehradun has its own halwai, and most families already have a favourite. If you're ordering gift boxes in bulk, place the order a few days ahead, because the popular shops are at their busiest on Choti Diwali and Diwali itself. Buy fresh milk sweets close to when you'll give them, since they don't keep long. If you're sending a box out of town, kaju katli and other dry sweets travel better.
A simple Diwali shopping plan
Start at Hanuman Chowk around 10 am with puri sabzi. Walk up through Moti Bazaar and Paltan Bazaar for clothes, dry fruits and decorations while the vehicle ban keeps the lanes clear, and stop for chole katlamba on the way. Leave Dhamawala for last if you're buying utensils or jewellery, then finish at a bakery near the Clock Tower for rusks to take home. The Tibetan Market deserves its own evening.
Tips before you go
- Carry a cloth bag or two, since you'll be walking with everything you buy.
- Most shops take UPI, but keep some cash for small stalls.
- Bargaining is normal in Paltan Bazaar, Indira Market and the Tibetan Market. It isn't done in branded showrooms.
- Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket in the crowded lanes.
